Quantity Take off

Quantity Take off

Quantity take-offs (QTO) are a detailed measurement of the materials and the work required to complete a project. During the pre-construction stage, they are developed by an estimator. This process involves breaking down the project into smaller, more manageable units, which are easier to measure or estimate. The level of detail necessary for the measurement can vary.

These measurements are used to format a bid about the construction scope. To find these quantities, estimators review drawings, specifications and models. Experienced estimators developed methods to help quantify their work. Many programmes have been developed to assist in making these processes more efficient.

With BIM quantity take-off can be done almost automatically given that the type of materials, their quantity and price are included in the model. It is known that construction projects often run overtime and over budget, and one of the reasons is the lack of accuracy in quantity take-offs and estimates.
